Animated 5v2 Rondo Drill: Spanish FA Practice for U9-U12 Players
|
|
Watch an animated 5v2 rondo taken directly from the Spanish Football Federation's official coaching programme for U9 to U12 players. Five players keep the ball from two defenders in a 10 x 10 yard area, scoring points for passing sequences and for hitting a cone in the middle. It is quick to set up, ball-based from start to finish, and built to develop passing, scanning and decision-making in young players.
The practice features in the Spanish Football Federation Coaching Program U9-12 book, written by Eduardo Valcárcel, Director of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Coaching School, with a foreword by Vicente Del Bosque.

A 5v2 rondo is a small-sided possession game where five players around the outside of a square keep the ball away from two defenders inside it. The numerical advantage lets players practise quick passing and movement under pressure, while the two defenders learn to press together and block passing lanes.
Mark out a 10 x 10 yard area with a cone placed in the centre.
Position 5 attackers (reds) around the outside of the square. You can use 6 if numbers allow.
Place 2 defenders (whites) inside the square.
The reds keep possession and look for the moment to strike a pass that hits the middle cone.
The defenders work as a pair to block passing lanes and protect the cone.
Swap the defenders after a set time, or after they win the ball a set number of times.
| Area | 10 x 10 yards |
| Players | 5 attackers v 2 defenders (or 6 v 2) |
| Duration | 10 minutes |
| Age group | U9 to U12 |
| Scoring | 1 point for a set number of consecutive passes. 2 points for hitting the middle cone. |
| Progressions | Add a second cone to defend, or limit the attackers to two touches. |
| Rotation | Swap the defenders after a set time, or after they win the ball a set number of times. |
The attackers win 1 point for completing a set number of consecutive passes and 2 points for hitting the cone in the middle. Because the cone is worth more, players are always looking to play forward through the defenders rather than just passing around them. The defenders must stay connected and close the central lane, which trains coordination, communication and intelligent pressing.
Scan before receiving: players should know where both defenders are before the ball arrives.
Open body shape: receive on the back foot so the next pass, or the pass through to the cone, is already on.
Patience, then speed: move the ball to shift the defenders, then strike the cone as soon as the lane opens.
The book's key coaching point: the two defenders must communicate and work together to close the passing angles and the path to the central cone.
The book suggests two progressions. Add a second cone so the defenders have more to protect and the attackers have more targets to find, or limit the attackers to two touches so they have to scan earlier and move the ball faster.
🗣 Eduardo Valcárcel, Director of the Spanish Football Federation Coaching School:
"This is my best advice, to always have players using a ball in your sessions from beginning to end, for all practices."
The Spanish Football Federation's coaching model focuses on developing young players to a high technical level with a ball in every session, from beginning to end. Rondos fit that model perfectly. Every player is involved, touches on the ball are constant, and players learn to make decisions under pressure from an early age. The U9-12 programme builds on this across 96 practices covering running with the ball, dribbling, duels, passing, rondos, possession games, heading, finishing, combination play and tactical development.

It comes from the Spanish Football Federation's U9 to U12 programme, but the set-up works with older players too. Make the area smaller or add a two-touch limit to increase the challenge.
The Spanish FA version uses a 10 x 10 yard square. A smaller area increases pressure on the attackers, while a larger area makes it easier to keep the ball.
The cone gives the attackers a target to play through the defenders, not just around them. Hitting it is worth 2 points, so players learn to look for forward passes while the defenders learn to protect the central lane.
